Sea, Sun and Salt

On Mother’s Day, we loaded the kids in the car, lathered them up with sunscreen and made a trip out to Capitola and Santa Cruz. I had been indecisive all week on where I wanted to go for the day and ultimately chose Capitola since it’s fairly close to where we live. Since I was a young girl, I have had a love for the ocean and love to visit it any chance I get. My birthday is this weekend, and we plan to drive up to Sausalito for the day. I can’t get enough sea air or lobster rolls!

First, we drove into Capitola and walked around the little village full of unique and fun shops. One place we never forget to bring the kids is the taffy shop. It literally has 100 flavors to choose from and the kids have so much fun loading up their baskets picking out the various flavors. My favorite has always been root beer and caramel apple.

We usually take a stroll along the pier and eat at the restaurant at the end, but unfortunately the wait was too long and silly me didn’t make reservations. Nevertheless, they have benches down at the end and it was nice to sit and breathe in the sea air for a bit. After awhile, we trekked back to the car and drove down to Santa Cruz where we ate on the pier there. Although they didn’t serve lobster rolls, I decided on a crab and shrimp sandwich and a side of fried clams. Growing up, we used to fly across the country to see our family every year on the East Coast and stay in a large beach house on Long Beach Island. I would order fried clams every day while there and it has carried into my adulthood to always order some whenever they are available. What made me even more thrilled was when my picky four year old, who never eats ANYTHING new, tried one and loved them. We were blown away!

After lunch, we spent 4 hours letting the kids go on rides at the Boardwalk. I am not cleared to ride anything yet and who knows if that will ever be allowed, but the girls are finally old enough to stand in line and go on rides together. Since the boys are also so close in age, they ride all of the smaller rides. I guess that is another great thing about having 4 of them. We have an even number and no one has to sit alone.

Isn’t this bag fantastic? I have gotten many emails about this bag and now you can check it out for yourself! I used it as a handbag that day but will most definitely be using it as a beach bag this Summer. It’s large enough to fit a towel, flip flops, lotion etc. I also love the red, white and blue color scheme.

I wore this pretty off the shoulder top by English Factory that only cost $64! It looks like it was made to go with this bag. What a perfect look for 4th of July too, right? Throw on some crops or overalls and you are good to go. I do want to mention, this top ran pretty small. I sized up to a medium. I also added some other cute tops and flats into the shop widget below.

It was a long day away from home and we made it through with no tantrums, no sunburns and all in one piece. I was especially surprised with how my leg and back held up with a day filled with standing and walking. I definitely felt it the next day and it took a little time to recover, but all in all I am thankful I was able to participate in a family outing of this magnitude 10 months post op.
