I’m so thrilled to share our backyard reveal with all of you! It’s been a long time coming, and the wait is finally over. Over the last few months, we have been busy working with System Pavers to come up with our dream outdoor space. Now that our backyard is 95% complete, I wanted to share our designed space and give you some inspiration for your own slice of outdoor Heaven. Read on to see how the design and install process worked for us and see dramatic before and after photos!
We purchased our new home in May and began adding little details to the inside first. The backyard was a blank rectangle of dirt and the challenge, at that point, seemed daunting. We figured we would leave it for a while until we could come up with a plan that fit our needs. If you live in the Bay Area, backyards in new construction, aren’t what they used to be. We wanted to make the most out of the yard and needed assistance on maximizing the space without minimizing the design. That’s where System Pavers comes in!
About System Pavers
Since opening in 1992, System Pavers has become the leading design and installation company in the outdoor remodeling industry. Their 25 year workmanship warranty, comprehensive design services, and average 95% satisfaction rating set them apart and allow them to provide the best quality products and customer service. System Pavers has numerous locations throughout the country and also offer competitive finance options for those who need it! I also want to mention their awesome website where you can track your projects progress, make payments and also reach your team for any questions you may have.
The Process
We set up an in home design meeting with Albert Hagan, their design specialist. Neil had sketched out a plan on paper (because that’s what Neil does haha) and that’s where the magic started to come to life! Albert, who is awesome by the way, brought samples to help guide us in the right direction when it came down to the design aspects. Even if you are unsure of a direction for a design, the System Pavers design team can whip up an awesome design plan that works for you! We knew we wanted a pergola, turf/paver grid pattern and a larger area of turf for the kids to be able to play. Albert took notes and measurements and quickly got to work finishing up our initial design. The final design was something that excited everyone!
Once we were on the books for demo, Angela Harlin, our project manager, came out to meet us and explain the entire demo and install process. She was instrumental in keeping everything moving as well as answering any questions we had during the job. And she definitely answered plenty! I also love seeing a woman in control and in charge. Girl Power!
First, their team came in to remove dirt and level the ground. The kids loved seeing the bobcats do their work. Once that was done, base rock and sand were brought in for the turf and pavers. So exciting to watch the whole process. If you saw my Insta stories, you got to see a little piece of all of this. We chose 24×24 vintage gray pavers and a lighter gray Mow Strip for the planters (on Alberts’ recommendation). They compliment each other very well and we are very happy with the end result.
We had some time issues due to the county and dealing with the permit process for our pergola. However, once that was approved, it was smooth sailing from there. Beau, from System Pavers, came in and installed the pergola in, I think, 2 days! I also loved how he kept us in the loop, showed us exactly what he was doing and step by step how it would be done. Our Alumawood pergola was built to include a large fan and electrical outlets for our convenience. It’s amazing how you can customize the pergola to fit your needs. Neil also hung vintage café lighting along the trim of our pergola for added detail.
After the turf, pavers and pergola were installed, Neil and I planted privet trees (which we will shape into large lollipops), gardenias and hydrangeas in the planters along with river rock. I can’t wait for the gardenias to grown into big round balls full of gorgeous white flowers! I will definitely share more updates on the next little details we add into the yard. Currently, we are growing coriscan mint in the house for ground cover. Planting Corsican mint seeds was an eye opener at the Wagner’s. We learned during that experience, that I am super patient (Neil is definitely not) and the only one who could deal with such a task. The seeds were barely visible to the eye, HA HA. We shall see how that turns out, if at all.
In closing, I want to rave about our exceptional experience with System Pavers and I thank all of their amazing staff who helped bring our outdoor dream to reality. Wishing my room actually looked like this right now. It’s currently filled will piles of laundry waiting to be folded after our trip....
Disneyland 2026 🙌🏻 I made it ya’ll. Definitely sore, and fatigued and sleep deprived and the back pain is insane. But I did it. 🤣...
I debated jumping on the bandwagon to share my 2016 throwback. In all honesty, 2016 was the hardest year of my life. It’s something that I’m reminded of daily in this never ending cycle of chronic pain and illness. For those that are new here, in 2016 I underwent 3 surgeries within 4 days. My 14 level spine surgery consisted of 2 surgeries going through my back and side, and then I needed an emergency bowel resection 3 days later due to my colon twisting and flipping on itself. When I woke up from my spine surgery, I immediately moved my right foot and tried to then move my left. It turned out, they knicked my spinal cord and damaged it. I had no feeling in my left leg or foot. Didn’t know if I was moving it and it felt like nothing was there. I remember immediately panicking and because I still had a tube in my mouth, they gave me a paper to write down what was wrong. Drs came in and told my husband and I that they weren’t sure if I’d walk again and definitely sure I wouldn’t be dancing. I lost 25 lbs, a Picc line was put in to try and get me any nutrition. I threw up bile in bucket after bucket.
I didn’t see my kids for 3 1/2 weeks and then had to be moved to a nursing facility. Once home, I had nurses and PT that would come to our house because staying in that facility and not seeing my kids drove me insane (my youngest was only 17 months old). Neil had to shower me, and wipe my butt 🙈. I went through 18 months of PT pushing myself to prove them all wrong. When I think about the last 10 years (and 2016 in particular), it has been a nonstop uphill battle for me. During that same year, we learned that both our daughters would then be diagnosed with the same thing. This is why I keep pushing forward no matter how I feel mentally or physically. I need to show these kids that mama can handle it and I want them to remember how strong I’ve tried to be because some day they may be faced with this same decision. I played this song on repeat laying in the hospital.
