So excited to share with you our weekend getaway to Lake Tahoe. I am so glad Neil and I are on the same page with taking a little special time away, just the two of us. Of course, we love to spend time with the kids and take them on outings, however, we have really made a conscious effort to make sure we get time alone. Whether that is dinner and a movie or a night or two away from the kids, it has been amazing for us to unwind and reconnect especially when our lives sometimes seem so chaotic. For an early Valentine’s present and to celebrate Neil’s new position at work, we packed up our jackets and snow boots and headed to the gorgeous Lake Tahoe.
Although South Lake’s snow in town had mostly melted, we found plenty of things to do. If you are staying in South Lake, I recommend eating lunch at some point at Azul Latin Kitchen. On weekends, they have happy hour all day with the best frozen lemonade and their food is delicious. We come here every time we drive up this way and have never been disappointed! Neil and I both order their fish tacos, which are super yummy.
We checked into our hotel, Base Camp South Lake Tahoe. We found an amazing deal on groupon and were pleasantly surprised not only by the perfect location but with how adorable this hotel was. Base Camp is walking distance to Heavenly Village as well as all of the casinos. They have a big courtyard with fire pits to make s’mores and a beer garden that plays live music on the weekends and serves pretty decent food until 10 pm.
After we checked in, Neil and I decided to drive half way around the lake and head up to the Ritz Carlton for drinks and some snacks. Where ever we visit, we always seem to find a Ritz! They have a wonderful outdoor space where you can order drinks, crab legs and watch the skiers ski in from the slopes. It was so cute to see little ones the same age as our son, Nicky, who is three, take on the little bunny hills. We definitely need to bring the kids up here to learn how to ski at North Star. That day, the Ritz had a special Moet Chandon stand which served a plethora of different champagnes and fresh seafood. It was soooo up my alley. Two of the things I love most!
On the way back towards our hotel, we grabbed a quick dinner. We are not big gamblers, however, we did put $5 each in two slot machines and came out $40 richer. That was about the extent of our night gambling. We walked over to our hotel where we ordered champagne and s’mores kits and spent a couple hours by the fire talking to a man who actually grew up in the same town we both did! What a small world.
Next week, I’ll write about our adventure dogsledding in Part 2. You don’t want to miss that!
